About Lancaster
Attractions in Lancaster
Central Market
One of the country's earliest publicly owned farmers markets, this place has been operating since the early 18th century. The redbrick building housing the market dates from 1889, making this also one of the oldest covered markets in the US. On sale is a good selection of fruit, vegetables, meat, baked goods and crafts, many of them from Amish farms.
Lancaster Cultural History Museum
Located in Lancaster's old city hall, this excellent museum contains 18th- and 19th-century paintings, quilts, pewter items, furniture and other craftwork by local artists. Check out the barrel-vault on the 2nd floor, added during a renovation in 1933, it's covered in colorfully stenciled cloth. The museum store has some tasteful crafty items for sale as well.
Amish Farm & House
The Amish Farm & House is an original farmhouse with a tour that describes Amish culture. You can see why the Amish are so respected for their skill as farmers as you wander amongst the smoke houses and quilting demonstrations. You can even learn how to grow tobacco if you want to.
